Coat care with love: How to choose the right shampoo for your dog

Your dog’s coat is more than just an aesthetic feature. It’s a protective organ, a complex system of hair, sebaceous glands, and skin that regulates temperature, protects against environmental factors, and signals health.

And just as with human hair, good coat care starts with proper cleansing.

Your dog’s skin is more sensitive than yours

Human skin has a pH of about 5.5, which is slightly acidic. A dog’s skin has a higher pH, between 6.5 and 7.5, close to neutral. That’s a crucial difference.

Conventional human shampoos are formulated for a lower pH and can disrupt a dog’s natural skin barrier, dry out the skin, and trigger itching, flaking, and irritation. Even mild human shampoos are often too acidic for dogs.

FOAM’s botanical dog shampoo is formulated with a dog’s pH in mind, gentle enough for sensitive canine skin and effective enough to give it a proper clean.

Natural ingredients, for your dog’s coat and the planet

Dogs lick themselves. Whatever gets on their coat ends up in their mouth. It’s a simple fact that makes the ingredient list on a dog shampoo more important than many people realize.

FOAM’s dog shampoo is free from sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances. Natural oils and botanical extracts nourish the coat and skin without ingredients you wouldn’t want your dog to ingest.

The Editor’s Note: A well-groomed coat is a sign of a healthy dog. A dry, dull, or itchy coat is often a sign that the skin is out of balance—not that the dog needs more frequent baths, but that it needs a better wash.

How often should you bathe your dog?

It depends on the breed, coat, and lifestyle, but most dogs do well with a bath every four to six weeks. Bathing too often can disrupt a dog’s natural oil production and dry out the skin, just as with human hair.

Dogs with a denser undercoat, such as golden retrievers and border collies, need a more thorough clean to reach the skin. Short-haired breeds can often go longer between baths.

Technique makes a difference

Wet the coat thoroughly before applying shampoo; water takes longer to penetrate the coat than you might think. Massage the shampoo down to the skin with your fingertips in circular motions, not just into the outer coat. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs completely clear.

Finish with a towel and let your dog air-dry or use a hair dryer on low heat. Avoid applying high heat directly to the skin. For extra softness and shine, you can also use FOAM’s botanical dog conditioner spray.
