Flaking scalp: causes and gentle treatment

A flaky scalp is a common symptom that can have several causes: dry scalp, dandruff, or psoriasis. Recognizing the difference is crucial because the treatment varies. In most cases, the first step is to switch to a sulfate-free, gentle shampoo and give your scalp time to restore its natural balance.

Flakes on your shoulders or in your hair are almost always a sign that the scalp ecosystem is out of balance, not that you wash your hair too infrequently. Understanding why flaking occurs is essential for choosing the right action.

What worsens scalp flaking?

Regardless of the cause, there are common factors that worsen flaking and are easy to address.

Avoid Why
Sulfates (SLS, SLES) Dries out the scalp and disrupts the pH balance
Synthetic fragrance Irritates sensitive skin and can trigger inflammation
Hot water Opens the scale layer and increases dryness and sensitivity
Washing too infrequently Sebum and dead skin cells accumulate and worsen the imbalance
Scratch hard Damages the skin barrier and increases the risk of inflammation

Gentle routine when your scalp is flaking

For most people, the cause is either a dry scalp or dandruff, and both respond well to the same basic routine: sulfate-free shampoo, the right washing frequency, and a gentle massage while washing.

Step What you do Why
1. Change shampoo Sulfate-free, preferably fragrance-free Restores pH and reduces irritation
2. Wash 2–3 times a week In cool water, massage gently Keeps sebum levels in check without over-drying
3. Finish with cold water Rinse in cold water for the last minute Seals the cuticle and reduces flaking
4. Scalp exfoliation Once a week before washing Loosens dead skin cells and improves absorption
5. Give it time At least 4 weeks consistently The scalp needs time to stabilize

FOAM's Rice Serenity shampoo bar is fragrance-free and formulated for sensitive, irritated scalps. It gently cleanses with a sulfate-free surfactant from coconut and contains rice oil with soothing properties. Read more about how to choose the right one in our guide to shampoo for an itchy scalp.

The Editor’s Note: If the flaking does not improve after four to six weeks of a gentle routine, it is worth seeking help. Psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis require medical assessment and treatment beyond a hair-care routine.

Ocean Waves is gentle enough for most sensitive scalps because it is free from sulfates and fragrance. If you have a particularly reactive scalp, start with a small amount and see how your scalp reacts.
Which products are best for sensitive skin? +
All our products are developed to be gentle and suitable for sensitive skin and scalps. We use essential oils in small amounts in many of our products. For sensitive skin, we therefore primarily recommend our fragrance-free products, as they do not contain any essential oils.
