Hair mask: How to give dry hair deep hydration and nourishment
There is a difference between hair that is clean and hair that is healthy. A hair mask is the step that takes you from one to the other. Not every day, but often enough for your lengths to retain their elasticity, shine, and ability to hold moisture. Read our guide to conditioner bars and solid conditioner to understand which product is best suited to your hair mask routine. For an overview of all the ways to moisturize your hair, read our complete guide to hair moisturization.
What does a hair mask do that regular conditioner does not?
Conditioner softens the hair’s outer layer and makes it easy to detangle. A hair mask goes deeper. It provides concentrated moisture and nourishment to the hair’s inner structure, repairs minor damage, and restores elasticity to strands that have become brittle from heat, coloring, or mechanical wear.
| Product | Purpose | How often? |
|---|---|---|
| Conditioner | Softens the outer layer, makes hair easy to detangle | With every wash |
| Hair mask | Deep treatment, moisturizes the inside of the hair | 1–2 times a week |
How to use a hair mask that actually makes a difference
Start with a gentle wash using a sulfate-free shampoo bar that opens the cuticle layer without stripping the hair. Then work a generous amount of our concentrated DREAMY hair conditioner bar into the lengths and leave it on for 10–15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and finish with a lightweight conditioner to seal the cuticle layer. Read about the science behind solid shampoos to understand how hair structure works.
The Editor's Note: Wrap a warm, damp towel around your hair while the mask is working. The heat helps open the cuticle layer further, allowing the oils to penetrate more deeply. That is the difference between a good hair mask and an excellent one.
When does your hair need more?

Protect the results
Once you have rinsed out the mask, your hair is at its most elastic and sensitive. Never rub it dry with a rough towel. Lock in moisture during the day with a leave-in conditioner and protect the lengths overnight with a silk pillowcase.
