Itchy scalp and hair loss: connections, biological causes, and botanical solutions

An itchy scalp and hair loss are often linked through two mechanisms: microscopic inflammation around the hair follicles that prematurely pushes them into the resting phase, and mechanical damage from fingernails breaking strands off at the root. Treating the underlying irritation with gentle, sulfate-free hair care is the most important step in breaking the cycle.

Noticing that you’re losing hair and have an itchy scalp can be both worrying and frustrating. The connection between an itchy scalp and hair loss is no coincidence; it’s caused by biological processes in and around the hair follicles. Here, we explain why you lose hair when your scalp itches and how gentle hair care can help you break the vicious cycle.

Why do you lose hair when your scalp itches?

  • Microscopic follicular stress: When the skin barrier is disrupted by harsh sulfates or fungal overgrowth, the immune system responds with inflammation. The hair follicle prematurely enters its resting phase, and the hair shaft loosens.
  • Mechanical damage from fingernails: Fingernails cause microscopic scratches and can physically pull out hairs that are in a sensitive growth phase. Learn more about why the scalp itches.

Comparison: Causes of itching and hair loss

Cause Scalp symptoms Effect on hair loss
Sulfates and harsh surfactants Dry skin, tightness, and itching A weakened skin barrier makes hair follicles more sensitive
Build-up and clogged hair follicles Irritation, residue at the roots Lack of oxygen around the hair roots, which can inhibit hair growth
Microbial imbalance Flaking, redness, and intense itching Localized inflammation that triggers increased hair shedding

How to break the cycle

1. Switch to soap-free, pH-balanced cleansing

The first step is to stop using harsh cleansers that disrupt the skin’s acid mantle. Sulfate-free shampoo bars with a skin-friendly pH cleanse gently and let your skin retain its natural moisture. Learn more about soap-free shampoo.

2. Moisturize the lengths without weighing down the hair follicles

Apply conditioner only from ear level downward. Botanical oils seal the cuticle and lock in moisture without causing build-up at the roots. Learn more about conditioner bars and solid conditioner.

3. Reduce nighttime friction

Switch to a silk pillowcase to reduce friction during the night. It protects both the hair strands from breakage and the skin from unnecessary friction while the hair follicles heal.

The Editor's Note: If you’re losing hair and have an itchy scalp at the same time, avoid blow-dryers and hot styling tools for a few weeks. Let your hair air-dry and avoid tight ponytails that pull at the roots.

When should you seek professional help?

If the itching is severe, you notice sudden patches of hair loss, or your scalp is oozing, you should see a doctor or dermatologist. It could be seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or another skin condition that requires medical treatment. Learn more about all aspects of scalp health in our complete guide to scalp health.

Vanliga frågor

Are your shampoo bars good for sensitive scalps and eczema? +
Yes, because our solid shampoos are free from harsh sulfates (such as SLS) and drying alcohols, they are very gentle. If you’re extra sensitive or sensitive to fragrances, we recommend our completely fragrance-free option, Rice Serenity.
Is there an adjustment period when switching to solid shampoo? +
If you’ve previously used conventional shampoo with silicones, your hair may need 1–2 weeks to adjust. During this time, silicone residue is cleared away and the scalp’s natural oil production becomes balanced, resulting in healthier, more natural-looking hair.
Which products are best for sensitive skin? +
All our products are formulated to be gentle and suitable for sensitive skin and scalps. We use small amounts of essential oils in many of our products. Essential oils are natural and healthy, but if you are sensitive to fragrances, you may react even to natural essential oils from citrus fruits or flowers, for example.
For sensitive skin, we therefore recommend our fragrance-free products first, as they do not contain any essential oils.
Can my shampoo cause hair loss? +
Strong sulfates can irritate the scalp and weaken the hair strand’s attachment to the follicle. Switch to a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo if you notice increased shedding when washing.
Does scalp massage help with hair loss? +
Scalp massage stimulates blood circulation around the hair follicles, which may strengthen the hair’s attachment and support the growth phase. Massage with your fingertips for 3-5 minutes each time you wash your hair.
