Why does hair become greasy when you switch to a shampoo bar?
Your hair may feel oilier during the first few washes when switching to a shampoo bar. This is normal. Most people notice the full effect of the gentle cleansing after 3–5 washes, once the scalp’s natural sebum balance has stabilized.
Conventional shampoos often contain silicones that form a coating around each hair strand. This provides immediate shine, but the scalp responds by producing extra sebum to compensate. When you switch to a gentle shampoo bar without silicones, the scalp gets a chance to find its natural balance again. It takes a few washes before you can see results and a little longer before you notice the full effect, so don’t give up after the first wash. What happens on the scalp?
Harsh sulfates and silicones trigger the scalp to overproduce sebum as compensation. A sulfate-free shampoo bar cleanses gently without disrupting the natural balance. After a few washes, the scalp no longer needs to compensate, and sebum production decreases. The result is hair that needs to be washed less often than before.
How to get the full effect faster
| Tip | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Rinse thoroughly | Residue from the bar can make your hair feel greasy, especially with hard water |
| Use cool water | Hot water stimulates sebum production |
| Massage your scalp | Increases circulation and improves cleansing |
| Avoid silicone in conditioner | Allows your hair and scalp to breathe |
The Editor’s Note: If your hair still feels heavy after five washes, check that you are rinsing the shampoo bar thoroughly and that your conditioner does not contain silicones. These are the most common causes.
Which shampoo bar is best for oily hair?
For fine or oily hair, we recommend FOAM’s White Flower, which contains bentonite clay for deep cleansing and blackcurrant oil to help balance sebum production. Not sure which bar is right for you? Read our guide to the best shampoo bar or take FOAM’s hair quiz.
