Balsammetoden: Konsten att tvätta håret med balsam

The conditioner method: The art of washing your hair with conditioner

There is a certain logic to washing your hair with something intended to care for it. The conditioner method, or co-washing as it is known internationally, is based on exactly that: replacing or supplementing shampoo with conditioner to clean the hair without stripping away its natural moisture.

The method is not new, but it has received renewed attention as more people have begun questioning what actually happens to their hair with every wash.

What is the conditioner method?

The conditioner method involves washing your hair with conditioner alone, or with a combination of mild cleanser and conditioner, instead of traditional shampoo. The conditioner is massaged into the scalp and hair, dissolves dirt and excess oil, and is then rinsed out.

The result is a cleansing process that does not strip the hair of its natural oils, making the method particularly suitable for dry, curly, colored, or chemically treated hair.

Why does it work?

Conventional shampoos often contain sulfates, strong surfactants that effectively remove oil and dirt but can also disrupt the hair’s natural pH balance and sebum production. The hair compensates by producing more sebum, creating a need for more frequent washing.

Conditioner contains gentler surfactants and emollients that cleanse delicately without disturbing this balance. The scalp becomes calmer, the hair retains its moisture, and its texture improves over time.

Is the conditioner method right for you?

The method works best for hair that is dry, curly, porous, or colored. For very fine hair or a scalp that produces a lot of sebum, the method can sometimes feel too heavy.

A good way to try it is to start by replacing every other wash with co-washing and observe how your hair responds during the first two to three weeks.

The conditioner method and sulfate-free products

The conditioner method works best in combination with sulfate-free products. FOAM’s shampoo bars are sulfate-free and formulated with gentle surfactants derived from coconut, making them compatible with a co-washing routine, either as a complement or as a gentler alternative for days when you want a slightly deeper cleanse.
