Diffuse or air-dry your curls? How to choose the right drying method

Diffusing provides more volume and faster drying time with low heat, while air-drying is the gentlest option without heat exposure. Many people with curly hair combine the two: air-dry 70–80% and finish with a diffuser for volume at the roots.

The final step in your curl routine is not the least important; it is often what determines whether your curls set with definition and shine or dry into a shapeless mass. How you dry your hair affects curl structure just as much as which products you use. The choice between diffusing and air-drying depends on what works for your curl type, your schedule, and your scalp health.

Air-drying: the curls’ natural way

Air-drying is the gentlest option. No heat, no friction, no risk of heat damage. Your hair dries in its natural shape, and the curls set without external influence.

Best for:

  • Type 2–3 curls (waves and loose curls)
  • High-porosity hair that is sensitive to heat
  • Warm days with natural humidity

Keep in mind:

  • Do not touch your hair while it dries, as this creates frizz
  • Use a microfiber towel or T-shirt to blot—not rub—away excess water
  • Air-drying takes longer and can result in flatter curls at the roots

Diffusing: volume and definition

A diffuser distributes heat evenly and lifts the curls from the roots without disrupting their structure. When used correctly, diffusing provides more volume, faster drying time, and often better definition than air-drying.

How to diffuse correctly:

  1. Blot your hair dry with a microfiber towel to remove excess water
  2. Make sure the conditioner bar is thoroughly scrunched into the wet lengths before you begin
  3. Set the diffuser to low or medium heat, never the highest setting
  4. Lift the curls toward the scalp with the diffuser and hold until each section is dry
  5. Finish with a short blast of cool air to close the cuticle and add shine

Best for:

  • Type 3–4 curls (tighter curls and kinky hair)
  • Low-porosity hair that needs heat to activate products
  • Cold days or when you are in a hurry

Combine the methods

Many people with curly hair combine the two: air-dry 70–80% and finish with a diffuser for volume and definition at the roots. This minimizes heat exposure while still providing the lift that air-drying rarely gives. Regardless of the method, make sure your hair has been thoroughly treated with a conditioner bar for curly hair before drying. Curls remember how they dried, so give them the right conditions from the start.

Vanliga frågor

Which products are suitable for curly hair? +
For curly hair, we primarily recommend Ocean waves, and you can also complement it with Dreamy hair for extra moisture and care for your hair.
Also try our silk pillowcases to give your hair the best care even during the night. Silk helps the hair retain its moisture and prevents frizz, which helps your curls maintain their beauty overnight.
How do I know what hair type I have? +
Look at the hair after it has dried naturally without products. Straight hair falls straight down. Wavy hair forms soft S-shapes. Curly hair forms defined spirals or ringlets. Fine hair feels light and thin between the fingers regardless of its curl pattern.
Do your shampoo bars contain sulfates? +
No, our shampoo bars are completely free from sulfates and also free from silicones. FOAM is a gentle alternative to conventional shampoo and formulated to suit even the most sensitive scalp.
