How do you use a shampoo bar? The complete guide

It’s a simple question with a simple answer, but with a few details that make a big difference to the result. A shampoo bar works differently from liquid shampoo, and understanding the technique is the difference between hair that feels clean and balanced and hair that feels weighed down or not quite clean. Not sure which shampoo bar is right for your hair? Start with our guide to the best shampoo bar for your hair type.

Prepare your hair properly

Wet your hair thoroughly before taking out the bar. The most common mistake is starting with too little water. Your hair should be completely wet, not just damp. This allows the surfactants in the bar to activate properly and lather evenly.

Activate the bar

There are two ways to apply it.

Directly to the scalp: Glide the bar directly over your scalp in long strokes. Effective and quick, especially for shorter hair.

Using your hands: Rub the bar between your palms until you create a rich lather, then apply it with your fingertips. This gives you more control and works well for longer hair.

Both methods work, so choose whichever feels most natural to you.

Massage it in thoroughly

Massage the lather in with your fingertips using circular motions over your scalp. Not your nails—your fingertips. This stimulates blood circulation and ensures that the surfactants reach the hair follicles. You can also use a scalp massager for even better results—read more about scalp massage and why it makes a difference. Want to learn more about building a complete routine? Let the lather work for one to two minutes before rinsing.

The Editor's Note: A shampoo bar lathers differently from liquid shampoo, often with less foam, but is just as effective. The amount of lather is not a measure of cleansing power. It is the surfactant concentration that cleans, not the foam.

Rinse thoroughly

Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Shampoo residue on the scalp is a common cause of itching, irritation, and hair that feels weighed down. Take your time here—it’s worth it.

It’s also a good idea to finish with a cool rinse. This closes the hair cuticle and immediately adds more shine. Do you have dry or color-treated hair? Read our special guides: shampoo bar for dry hair and shampoo bar for color-treated hair.

Follow up after washing

For extra moisture and nourishment, apply leave-in conditioner or leave-in spray to damp hair. Does your hair need a deeper treatment? Read about hair masks or try an overnight hair mask for maximum results.

Store the bar properly

Let the bar dry between washes. A soap dish with good air circulation, or a small shelf where the bar can dry freely, significantly extends its lifespan. A bar left sitting in water dissolves faster and doesn’t last as long.

A well-stored 60-gram shampoo bar lasts for 60 to 80 washes.

Vanliga frågor

What is zero-waste hair care? +
Zero-waste hair care means choosing products without plastic packaging, either package-free solid bars or products in paper packaging, to reduce waste from your beauty routine.
Does solid shampoo work as well as liquid shampoo? +
Yes. Modern solid bars are pH-balanced and formulated with the same active ingredients as liquid alternatives. They cleanse effectively without drying out the scalp and last, on average, as long as 2–3 bottles of liquid shampoo.
Does hair need an adjustment period? +
If you switch from products containing silicones, it may take a few washes before your hair feels normal, as silicones build up a layer on the hair shaft. With a sulfate- and silicone-free solid bar, the adjustment period is usually short; most people notice a difference after just 2–3 washes.
How should I store my solid bar properly? +
Store it on a soap dish with good airflow so it can dry properly between washes. Alternatively, hang it in a shampoo bag. Avoid letting it sit in standing water. With proper storage, you can significantly extend its lifespan.
Does the shampoo bar help with oily roots? +
Yes, gentle but effective cleansing reduces excess sebum production over time. Strong sulfates can paradoxically worsen oily hair because the scalp compensates by producing more sebum. Weightless Volume Duo’s shampoo bar cleanses without triggering that reaction.
Why can a sulfate-free shampoo bar be better than co-washing? +
A sulfate-free shampoo bar thoroughly cleanses the scalp with mild surfactants without drying out the hair. Conditioner is not formulated for cleansing and can leave residue with frequent use, especially if you use styling products.
Can I combine a sulfate-free shampoo bar with conditioner? +
Yes, that is actually the optimal routine. Shampoo your scalp with a sulfate-free shampoo bar and finish with conditioner on the lengths and ends. You get a clean scalp and moisturized, soft lengths.
What is the difference between a shampoo bar and liquid shampoo? +
The shampoo bar is concentrated and water-free, making it more sustainable and environmentally friendly. It contains no preservatives needed to stabilize water, and one bar is equivalent to approximately 2–3 bottles of liquid shampoo.
How long does it take to get used to a shampoo bar? +
Most people notice a difference after 2–4 washes. Hair accustomed to silicones may need a brief transition period of 1–2 weeks, during which it may feel heavier than usual. This is normal and will pass.
How do I use the shampoo bar correctly for wavy hair? +
Lather directly onto the scalp using gentle, circular motions. Avoid rubbing the lengths, as this creates frizz. Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle and preserve the shape of the waves.
Can I use your shampoo bar on color-treated hair? +
Yes, all our shampoo bars are completely sulfate-free and color-safe. Our mild, plant-based surfactants gently cleanse the hair without stripping its color or drying it out.
How should a shampoo bar be stored in the shower? +
To make the bar last as long as possible, the most important thing is to let it dry out thoroughly between washes. Store it on a well-ventilated soap dish with drainage, or hang it in a shampoo bag in the shower so the water can drain away.
Which shampoo bar is best for my hair type? +
It depends on your scalp and your hair’s needs. Choose Forest Treat if you have dry or damaged hair that needs moisture, Ocean Waves for curly or wavy hair that needs volume and definition, White Flower if you have normal to oily hair or an oily scalp, and Rice Serenity if you have a sensitive scalp or prefer a completely fragrance-free shampoo bar.
How long does a shampoo bar last? +
A shampoo bar from FOAM is concentrated and often lasts the equivalent of at least 2 regular-sized bottles of shampoo.
Store the shampoo bar in a dry place between uses so it lasts longer.
Which shampoo bar should I choose? +

How do you use a shampoo bar? +
Using a shampoo bar is easy. Here’s how: 1. Wet your hair and the shampoo bar. 2. Lather it in your hands or rub the bar directly onto your hair. 3. Massage your scalp and work the lather through the lengths. 4. Rinse
