Scalp that smells of yeast: causes and how to get rid of the odor

A scalp that smells yeasty is a sign of an overgrowth of the yeast Malassezia, which naturally occurs on everyone’s scalp. When the yeast is given overly favorable conditions, often due to excessive sebum production or washing too infrequently, it produces fatty acids that create a characteristic yeast-like odor. The balance can usually be restored with the right washing frequency and gentle, sulfate-free products.

The odor is not a hygiene problem. It is biology. Malassezia thrives in sebum-rich environments and breaks down fatty acids in a way that can create a yeast-like or mold-like odor. It is most common on scalps with excessive sebum production, but can be intensified by unsuitable products or an aversion to washing the hair.

Why does my scalp smell yeasty?

Malassezia is a yeast that lives on sebum. When sebum production increases due to stress, hormones, heat, or washing too infrequently, the yeast gets more nourishment and reproduces more quickly. The by-products of this breakdown create the characteristic odor. The same yeast that causes dandruff can therefore also cause a yeasty odor on the scalp, and the two often occur together.

What makes a yeasty scalp odor worse?

Factor Why it makes it worse
Washing too infrequently Sebum and dead skin cells accumulate, giving Malassezia more nourishment
Hot and humid climate Heat and moisture encourage yeast growth
Stress Increases sebum production through stress hormones
Strong sulfates Over-dry the scalp, which compensates by producing more sebum
Silicones in products Build up deposits that the yeast thrives in
Sweating under a hat or helmet A warm, humid microclimate directly against the scalp

A gentle routine for combating a yeasty scalp odor

Step What to do Why
1. Switch to sulfate-free shampoo Sulfate-free, silicone-free, and preferably fragrance-free Reduces sebum compensation and buildup
2. Wash 2–3 times per week Not too infrequently, not too often Keeps sebum levels balanced without over-drying
3. Scalp exfoliation Once a week before washing Loosens dead skin cells and sebum buildup
4. Rinse thoroughly Make sure all the shampoo is rinsed out Product residue provides nourishment for the yeast
5. Air out your scalp Avoid wearing tight hats for long periods and let your hair air-dry Reduces moisture and heat that favor Malassezia

FOAM’s Rice Serenity shampoo bar is fragrance-free, sulfate-free, and silicone-free, making it a natural choice when your scalp needs to restore its balance. Learn more about how to choose the right one in our guide to shampoo for an itchy scalp and about scalp exfoliation as a complement.

The Editor’s Note: A yeasty scalp odor rarely disappears on its own if you do not change your routine. Give the right products and washing frequency four to six weeks, and notice the difference. If the odor is strong, persistent, or accompanied by severe flaking or itching, seborrheic dermatitis may be the cause, in which case medical treatment may be needed.

Vanliga frågor

What should I choose if I have both wavy hair and a sensitive scalp? +
Ocean Waves is gentle enough for most sensitive scalps because it is free from sulfates and fragrance. If you have a particularly reactive scalp, start with a small amount and see how your scalp reacts.
Are your shampoo bars suitable for sensitive scalps and eczema? +
Yes, because our solid shampoos are free from harsh sulfates (such as SLS) and drying alcohols, they are very gentle. If you are particularly sensitive or sensitive to fragrances, we recommend our completely fragrance-free option, Rice Serenity.
Which products are best for sensitive skin? +
All our products are developed to be gentle and suitable for sensitive skin and scalps. We use essential oils in small amounts in many of our products. Essential oils are natural and healthy, but if you are sensitive to fragrances, you may also react to natural essential oils from, for example, citrus fruits or flowers.
For sensitive skin, we therefore primarily recommend our fragrance-free products, as they do not contain any essential oils.
