The Art of Building a Hair Care Routine with a Shampoo Bar

A good hair care routine isn’t a list of steps. It’s an understanding of what your hair actually needs, and when.

It’s the difference between following a protocol and listening to your hair. The shampoo bar naturally fits into the latter approach, as it is formulated to work with the hair’s own processes rather than overpowering them. New to shampoo bars? First, read our complete guide to using a shampoo bar.

Start by understanding your hair

Before you build a routine, it’s worth asking yourself a simple question: what is the scalp doing, and what do the lengths need?

The scalp and lengths often have different needs. A scalp that produces a lot of sebum needs cleansing and balance. Dry, damaged lengths need moisture and nourishment. A good routine addresses both without compromising one for the sake of the other. Looking for the right shampoo bar for your hair type? See our guide to the best shampoo bar.

Frequency: less often than you think

The most common mistake in hair care is washing too often. Every wash, regardless of how gentle the product is, affects the scalp’s natural sebum balance. The scalp compensates by producing more sebum, and the hair feels greasy more quickly.

Most hair types do best with washing every two to three days. Start by extending the interval by one day and give your scalp four to six weeks to adjust.

The Editor's Note: When you switch from sulfate shampoo to a shampoo bar, your hair may feel different during the first few weeks. This is normal. After years of exposure to harsh surfactants, the scalp needs time to restore its natural sebum balance. Give it time.

Application: technique matters

Wet your hair thoroughly before using the bar. Rub the bar between your palms to activate the lather, or apply it directly to the scalp using circular motions. Massage it in with your fingertips; this stimulates blood circulation and ensures that the surfactants reach the scalp.

Rinse thoroughly. Shampoo residue on the scalp is a common cause of itching and irritation. Learn more about the science behind why solid shampoos work better for scalp health.

When a conditioner bar makes a difference

The shampoo bar’s built-in conditioning effect is enough for most washes. But for lengths that need extra care, after sun and swimming, in dry weather, or if the hair has been chemically treated, FOAM’s Dreamy Hair conditioner bar is a powerful complement. Apply to damp hair from the mid-lengths to the ends, leave on for two to three minutes, and rinse out. Learn more about how shampoo bars and conditioner bars complement each other.

A routine that lasts

The best hair care routine is the one you actually follow. Simple, consistent, and adapted to your hair—not to what looks good on a shelf.
