Zero-waste hair care: how to choose package-free and sustainable products
No-waste hair care means choosing products without plastic packaging, either packaging-free solid bars or products in paper packaging, and it is one of the easiest ways to reduce your environmental impact in the bathroom without compromising hair quality.
The bathroom is one of the rooms in the home where we use the most single-use plastic. Shampoo bottles, conditioner containers, hair mask tubes—they pile up year after year without us really thinking about it. But there is another way, one that actually works better than many people expect.
Solid hair care has long been associated with old-fashioned bars of soap and sticky hair. That idea is thoroughly outdated. Modern solid bars are formulated with the same active ingredients as liquid alternatives, are pH-balanced, and are adapted to specific hair needs, from fine and sensitive to curly and dry. The difference is that they are delivered without a drop of plastic.
What does no waste actually mean?
No waste, or zero waste, is an approach that aims to minimize waste at every stage, from production to packaging to use. In practice, it does not have to mean zero waste in the literal sense, but rather making a conscious choice to avoid unnecessary single-use packaging when alternatives are available.
In the context of hair care, there are two main options. One is packaging-free hair care, meaning solid bars without any packaging at all, or with a minimal paper band. The other is products in paper packaging, which is recyclable and biodegradable. FOAM’s hair care comes in both versions: solid bars can be chosen completely packaging-free, and whenever packaging is used, it is always paper.
On average, one solid shampoo bar replaces 2–3 bottles of liquid shampoo. That means not only less plastic, but also fewer shipments, less water in the formula, and a longer shelf life.
How do you choose the right no-waste product for your hair type?
The most common mistake when switching to solid hair care is choosing a product that does not suit your hair’s specific needs. Just as with liquid hair care, it is important to match the formula to your hair’s structure and scalp characteristics.
| Hair type | What to consider | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Normal to combination | Choose a balanced formula without added moisture | Solid shampoo bar + conditioner bar |
| Dry or damaged | Prioritize moisture-binding ingredients such as shea butter and argan | Forest Treat range |
| Curly or wavy | Choose sulfate-free products with extra emollients | Ocean Waves range |
| Sensitive scalp | Avoid fragrance and choose a pH-balanced formula without irritating ingredients | Rice Serenity range |
| Fine or thin | Avoid heavy oils and choose a lightweight formula with a volumizing effect | White Flower range |
Is there a transition period?
A common question is whether hair needs a transition period when switching from liquid to solid hair care. The answer depends on which product you are switching from. If your current routine contains silicones, they build up a layer on the hair shaft that takes a few washes to remove. This is not a sign that solid bars do not work; it is a sign that the cuticle is regaining its natural structure.
With a pH-balanced solid bar that is free from silicones and sulfates, the transition is usually shorter than many people fear: for most people, a noticeable improvement is already visible after 2–3 washes.
How to store your solid bar properly
A solid bar lasts longest when it is allowed to dry thoroughly between washes. Store it on a soap dish with good airflow, never lying in a wet soap dish. With proper storage, one shampoo bar lasts on average as long as two to three bottles of liquid shampoo.
That is sustainability in two ways: good for your hair, better for the planet. Would you like to learn more about building a sustainable hair care routine that stands the test of time?
