Porosity and moisture balance for curly hair – how to find the right one
Before you buy yet another product that promises everything but delivers little—pause and ask yourself one question: do you know your hair’s porosity? It’s one of the most underrated factors in hair care, and for curly hair it’s the difference between products that sink in and provide moisture and products that merely sit on the surface.
Porosity is about how open or closed the cuticle layer is—and it controls everything from how you wash your hair to which conditioner bar for curly hair actually works for you.
What is hair porosity?
The cuticle layer is the outermost layer of the hair shaft, made up of overlapping scales like roof tiles. Porosity describes how tightly or loosely these scales are arranged:
- Low porosity: Tightly closed cuticles. The hair takes a long time to get wet and absorbs products slowly. Moisture stays in for a long time once it gets in.
- Medium porosity: Balanced. The hair absorbs and retains moisture without difficulty. Most products work well.
- High porosity: Open or damaged cuticles. The hair gets wet quickly but loses moisture just as fast. Common in chemically treated, bleached, or heat-damaged hair.
How do you test your porosity?
The float test: Place a clean, dry strand of hair in a glass of water. Does it float for a long time? Low porosity. Does it sink quickly? High porosity.
The feel test: Run your fingers upward along a strand of hair, against the direction of hair growth. Does it feel uneven and rough? High porosity. Smooth? Low porosity.
Moisture balance—more than just conditioner
Moisture balance for curly hair is about finding the right balance between moisture and protein. Too much moisture without protein creates soft but lifeless hair without definition. Too much protein without moisture creates stiff, brittle hair that breaks easily.

Choosing products based on porosity
Low porosity: Choose lightweight, moisturizing products. The DREAMY hair conditioner bar works excellently—apply it to wet hair and use a warm shower cap to open the cuticle layer and allow glycerin and coconut oil to penetrate. Rinse thoroughly with cool water afterward.
High porosity: Choose nourishing, conditioning products and leave them on for longer. Using DREAMY hair as an overnight hair mask is especially effective—cetearyl alcohol and coconut oil smooth the open cuticle layer, while lactic acid closes the cuticle layer when you rinse with cool water.
For curly hair, the same principle applies regardless of porosity: Ocean Waves shampoo bar gently cleanses with Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate and lactic acid, which regulates pH—a good foundation for all curl types. Read more in our complete guide to curly hair.
Porosity isn’t a problem to solve—it’s a language to learn.
