Hair soap: what is it, and how does it differ from a shampoo bar?
Before shampoo bars, there was hair soap. For decades, people washed their hair with the same soap they used on their bodies, and their hair still did well. But once we understand what actually happens to hair during washing, the differences between hair soap and modern Shampoo bar become clear.

What is hair soap?
Hair soap is a solid soap formulated for use on the hair instead of the body. Historically, it was ordinary solid soap made through saponification with vegetable or animal oils. Today, the term is sometimes used synonymously with Shampoo bar, but there is an important difference: traditional hair soap has a high pH (around 9–10), while a modern Shampoo bar is pH-balanced to match the hair’s natural pH (approx. 4.5–5.5).
Why does pH matter so much for hair?
The hair’s outermost layer, the cuticle, consists of overlapping scales that open at a high pH and close at a low pH. When the cuticle is open, the hair is more vulnerable to mechanical damage, loses moisture more quickly, and feels rough and dull. A high-pH product, such as traditional hair soap, opens the cuticle during washing and requires the hair to restore its balance afterward.
A pH-balanced Shampoo bar instead works in harmony with the hair’s natural pH and allows the cuticle to remain closed during washing. The result is softer, shinier hair right away, without an adjustment period.
When can you use solid soap on your hair?
Solid soap can work on the hair in an emergency or for people with very resilient, thick hair that tolerates a higher pH. For most hair types, especially dry, curly, color-treated, or fine hair, a pH-balanced Shampoo bar is clearly a better long-term option.
