Fast soap: the complete guide
The skin is the body’s largest organ, and yet we treat it daily with products filled with water, preservatives, and packaging that never breaks down. Solid soap is different: concentrated, effective, and created to genuinely care for the skin rather than merely clean it.
In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about solid soap: how it differs from liquid alternatives, how to choose the right formula for your skin type, and why the ingredients matter more than you might think.
What is solid soap?
Solid soap is a collective term for solid cleansing products without the water that makes up 60–80% of most liquid soaps. There are two main types: traditional soap made through saponification, and syndet bars (synthetic detergent bars) based on mild surfactants.
FOAM’s beauty bars belong to the latter category. They are formulated around Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, one of the mildest surfactants available, and are pH-balanced to suit the skin’s natural pH directly, without any adjustment period. This is a crucial difference from traditional soap, which has a high pH (around 9–10) and requires the skin to restore its acid–base balance after every wash.
Solid or liquid soap: what is the real difference?
It is not just about consistency. The differences are fundamental: liquid soap often contains synthetic surfactants (SLS, SLES), preservatives, and fragrance ingredients, while a well-made syndet bar is based on mild surfactants and a short ingredient list. A 60g solid soap bar typically replaces 2–3 250ml bottles of liquid soap, without plastic or a pump. We explore the differences in detail in our guide to solid or liquid soap.
How do you choose the right solid soap for your skin type?
All skin types can use solid soap, but the formulation matters.
Sensitive skin and face
Choose a syndet bar with nourishing oils such as shea butter and coconut oil, without strong fragrances or exfoliating additives. FOAM’s Shea Beauty Bar is formulated specifically for sensitive skin and the face, with Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (organic shea butter) and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate as a mild surfactant. Read more in our guide to facial soap for sensitive skin.
Normal to dry skin and the body
A rich formula with coconut oil, shea butter, and botanical oils provides moisture and softness. FOAM’s Raspberry Beauty Bar combines nourishing Rubus Idaeus Seed Oil with Rosa Damascena Flower Extract and Vitis Vinifera Seed Oil, perfect for the whole body. If you want gentle exfoliation in the shower, you can find more in our guide to exfoliating soap and exfoliation.
Hair and scalp
Solid soap can also be used as hair soap, a natural predecessor to the shampoo bar. Want to learn more about hair care with solid products? Explore our guides to moisturising hair care and care for curly hair.
Ingredients to know
A well-made syndet bar has a short, easy-to-read ingredient list. Avoid soaps containing EDTA, BHT, or synthetic colourants. They offer no benefits for the skin and unnecessarily burden the environment. FOAM’s beauty bars are made in Sweden with natural, vegan ingredients.
How to care for your solid soap
Solid soap lasts longer and works better when stored correctly. A soap bar left in standing water dissolves quickly, so always let it dry between uses. Use a stoneware soap dish with drainage or an organza soap bag that can be hung in the shower. We compare the options in detail in our guide to soap bags and soap dishes.
Vegan and organic solid soap: what should you consider?
Not all natural soap is vegan. Tallow (animal fat) is a traditional ingredient in many soaps. Choose soaps that clearly state that they are based on vegetable oils. FOAM’s beauty bars are vegan, cruelty-free, and made in Sweden without plastic packaging. Learn more about what this means in our guides to vegan soap and organic soap.
