Protective barrier: Candelilla wax

Candelilla wax is a completely plant-based and vegan wax known for its exceptionally protective properties. In a balm for lips and face, it forms a soft, invisible shield that effectively locks in moisture and protects the skin from weather, wind, and dryness. The wax gives the product a luxurious, velvety texture that melts softly on the skin without clogging pores, while leaving a soothing and long-lasting softening sensation.

Candelilla Wax description

Candelilla wax is a hard, plant-based wax extracted from the leaves and stems of the candelilla shrub, a plant that grows wild in dry areas of Mexico and the southwestern USA. In skincare, the wax is especially valued for its fantastic softening properties and its ability to strengthen the skin barrier. The wax is naturally rich in long-chain hydrocarbons and fatty acids, which allows it to form a thin, protective film on the skin’s surface. This layer reduces water evaporation from the skin (known as transepidermal water loss) without making the skin feel suffocated or sticky. This makes the ingredient ideal for caring for dry, cracked lips as well as irritated or flaky skin. Because candelilla wax has excellent stabilizing properties and provides good glide, it is widely used as a texture enhancer in everything from lip balms and lipsticks to face creams and ointments. The wax gives products a smooth texture and a nice shine. Unlike many other heavy waxes and oils, candelilla wax does not clog pores, making it suitable for all skin types, including oily, sensitive, or acne-prone skin.
