How do you use a shampoo bar? The complete guide
It’s a simple question with a simple answer, but with a few details that make a big difference to the result. A shampoo bar works differently from liquid shampoo, and understanding the technique is the difference between hair that feels clean and balanced and hair that feels weighed down or not quite clean. Not sure which shampoo bar is right for your hair? Start with our guide to the best shampoo bar for your hair type.
Prepare your hair properly
Wet your hair thoroughly before taking out the bar. The most common mistake is starting with too little water. Your hair should be completely wet, not just damp. This allows the surfactants in the bar to activate properly and lather evenly.
Activate the bar
There are two ways to apply it.
Directly to the scalp: Glide the bar directly over your scalp in long strokes. Effective and quick, especially for shorter hair.
Using your hands: Rub the bar between your palms until you create a rich lather, then apply it with your fingertips. This gives you more control and works well for longer hair.
Both methods work, so choose whichever feels most natural to you.
Massage it in thoroughly
Massage the lather in with your fingertips using circular motions over your scalp. Not your nails—your fingertips. This stimulates blood circulation and ensures that the surfactants reach the hair follicles. Let the lather work for one to two minutes before rinsing.
The Editor's Note: A shampoo bar lathers differently from liquid shampoo, often with less foam, but is just as effective. The amount of lather is not a measure of cleansing power. It is the surfactant concentration that cleans, not the foam.
Rinse thoroughly
Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Shampoo residue on the scalp is a common cause of itching, irritation, and hair that feels weighed down. Take your time here—it’s worth it.
It’s also a good idea to finish with a cool rinse. This closes the hair cuticle and immediately adds more shine. Do you have dry or color-treated hair? Read our special guides: shampoo bar for dry hair and shampoo bar for color-treated hair.
Follow up after washing
For extra moisture and nourishment, apply leave-in conditioner or leave-in spray to damp hair. Does your hair need a deeper treatment? Read about hair masks or try an overnight hair mask for maximum results.
Store the bar properly
Let the bar dry between washes. A soap dish with good air circulation, or a small shelf where the bar can dry freely, significantly extends its lifespan. A bar left sitting in water dissolves faster and doesn’t last as long.
A well-stored 60-gram shampoo bar lasts for 60 to 80 washes.
The technique takes a couple of washes to get used to. After that, it feels just as natural as everything else in the shower. Protect your hair overnight with a silk pillowcase to retain moisture and shine until morning.
